Residents of Kiyenje Village in Luwero Town Council, Luwero District, have turned to social media to trace the relatives of a young man found dead in his rented room.
The residents discovered the man’s body lying face down on a bed on Sunday morning after finding his room open. However, those who gathered at the scene could not immediately identify him and reportedly struggled to reach the landlord.
They took a photograph of the deceased and shared it on social media in an attempt to establish his identity and locate his relatives.
The effort helped people who knew him identify him as Anthony Buyinza, a man believed to be in his 20s.
Residents later notified police, who took the body to Luwero General Hospital for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Kiyenje Village LC1 Chairperson Christopher Segujja told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that he had no record of Buyinza among the residents in his area.
Segujja said local leaders needed to maintain accurate records of residents to help authorities identify people and trace their relatives when incidents such as unexplained deaths occur.
He urged residents to register with their local leaders to improve security and enable authorities to respond more effectively to emergencies.
By the time of filing this report, Luwero Police had not commented on the incident.
