Police have confirmed one person dead and another injured after a multi-storey building under construction collapsed onto a residential house along Stretcher Road in Nakawa Division, Kampala.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala said the incident occurred at about midnight, trapping an unknown number of people beneath the rubble.

The deceased was later identified as Serose Katusiime, 50, who was selling maize near the construction site. Her body was retrieved from the debris, while one survivor was rescued and rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment.

By Monday afternoon, rescue teams were still clearing the rubble in search of other possible victims, including site workers who may have been inside the building when it collapsed.

“Our officers are still at the scene conducting operations to establish the circumstances and determine whether any other persons remain trapped,” Kawala said.

The Ntinda incident adds to a series of building collapses in Kampala and its surrounding areas that have claimed dozens of lives in recent years.

Data from the National Building Review Board (NBRB) indicates that Uganda recorded at least 41 structural failures between 2019 and 2025, resulting in more than 90 deaths. Among the notable incidents was the collapse of a building in Lukuli, Makindye Division, in 2020, which killed 13 people. In May 2025, a building collapsed in Kisaasi, killing two people.

Investigations by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the NBRB into building collapses have frequently pointed to recurring safety concerns, including construction without approved building plans, the involvement of unqualified or unregistered engineers, poor workmanship and the use of substandard materials.

Authorities have also raised concerns about developers continuing with construction, sometimes at night, even after stop-work orders have been issued.

The cause of the Ntinda collapse had not been established by Monday afternoon as police and rescue teams continued operations at the scene.
