Tanzania Mourns as President Samia’s Husband Hafidh Ameir Dies

The United Republic of Tanzania is mourning the death of Mzee Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died today Monday September 7, 2026 while receiving treatment in Tanzania.

The death was announced by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi who said Ameir [76 years] had been receiving treatment for a heard condition from the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.

According to Ndejembi, burial arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

A former agricultural officer and academic, Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s first Gentleman when his wife Samia Suluhu became President in 2021 owing to the death of Dr. John Pombe Magufuri the same year.

The couple had been married since 1978 and had four Children. His death comes at a significant moment for Tanzania where his wife remains a central figure in the country’s political and regional affairs.
