New Arua City Mayor Sworn In, Promises Unity And Development

Lawrence Alionzi, Arua City Mayor Swears in as Rtd. Arch Bishop Luke Orombi, Chief Magistrate Arua and Other Officials Look on at the Mayor's Gardens on Tuesday.

Lawrence Alionzi, aka Dangote, has been sworn in as the new mayor of Arua City. He becomes the second mayor after Arua was elevated from municipality to city status.  Alionzi succeeds Sam Nyakua, who served for five years.

Together with his council members and executives, Alionzi took oaths administered by Conrad Obol Oroya, the Chief Magistrate of Arua, who called on the new Mayor and his council to work diligently and maintain honesty, and desist from corruption.

In his maiden address to the congregation, Lawrence Alionzi commended the people of Arua City for putting trust and voting for him and promised to ensure unity and development during his term of office.

Alionzi also appealed to the people of Arua City to put efforts into fighting poverty, disease, ignorance, and corruption, which he described as the biggest enemies of the people.

Meanwhile, Retired Archbishop of Uganda,  Henry Luke Orombi, who was the chief guest at the swearing-in ceremony, called on the Mayor and his council to ensure a clean record of work, fear God, and maintain integrity at all times.

Retired Archbishop Orombi also tasked the new Mayor and his team to listen to the people who elected them and address their issues accordingly.

Betty Otekat, the Resident City Commissioner of Arua, pledged security cooperation with the new leadership of Arua City to get rid of urban crime in the City and for better service delivery to the people.

The RCC added that as the people look forward to a new era of development, they should put security at the forefront.

The former Speaker of Arua City Council, Teddy Yako, managed to retain her position unopposed, while Jackson Dratibi, the new deputy Mayor, Joseph Ayaba, new Secretary for Social and Community Services, Rashid Onzima, Secretary for Works and Technical Services, and Doreen Onyiru, Secretary for Finance and Administration, were unanimously seconded after being nominated by the new Mayor.
