Police in the Kiira Region have suspended the burial of a four-year-old boy in Jinja District after two men emerged claiming to be his biological father. The remains at the centre of the dispute belong to a toddler who reportedly drowned in Kiko Stream in Busedde Sub-county.

According to police, the child’s mother, Gloria Nambuya, a resident of Kiko Village, first reported a case of a missing person at Kakira Central Police Station on April 24, 2026.

However, fresh information from the child’s friends emerged the following day, indicating that the toddler had allegedly drowned in the nearby Kiko Stream.

The new development prompted police to launch a search operation in the stream, where the child’s body was later recovered.

The body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. Trouble reportedly started when relatives gathered to identify the deceased, and two men surfaced, each claiming to be the child’s father.

Witnesses say the two exchanged bitter words and allegedly attempted to grab the body from each other, forcing mortuary authorities to call in police. Police have since halted the postmortem and burial arrangements pending investigations into the competing paternity claims.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the incident, saying authorities have recommended DNA testing for the two claimants and the deceased child to scientifically establish the rightful father.

Mubi said the child’s body will remain at the mortuary until the investigations and DNA process are completed. He added that police want to avoid physical confrontations and ensure the rightful next of kin is identified before the child is handed over for burial.
